In a demonstration of holiday spirit behind bars, Sheriff Robert Luna joined the inmates of Men’s Central Jail in downtown Los Angeles for the annual Christmas Mass. The ceremony, a longstanding tradition at the correctional facility, offers inmates a moment of solace and a chance to observe the holiday despite their present hardships, according to a post on the Sheriff's Department's official Facebook page.
The Mass was led by Archbishop Jose H. Gomez, who, alongside Assistant Sheriff Sergio Aloma, later mingled with the prison staff. Their interactions went beyond the usual protocol, with handshakes exchanged and visits to the housing modules, "spreading holiday joy," as the Sheriff's Department described it.
