A burst of violence disrupted Barton Creek Square mall shoppers on Saturday when a person was shot following an altercation, according to Austin police. The incident took place between an AMC movie theater and The Cheesecake Factory around 4:43 p.m., as reported by KXAN. The victim, wounded yet stable, was rushed to the hospital with injuries deemed not life-threatening, while the mall was placed under a temporary lockdown.
Austin Police Department noted that a suspect had not been arrested by late Saturday, assuring the public that the situation was not an active shooter event and that there was no ongoing danger. In an evacuation that ensued from the shooting, two other individuals sustained minor injuries, bypassing a hospital visit, as mentioned by FOX 7 Austin.
The mall reopened its doors before evening, excluding the vicinity of the crime scene. Various accounts from witnesses provided a harrowing glimpse of the chaos: "Then, a guy went in his bag—from about 20 or 30 yards across the courtyard—and fired two shots, and then they all took off running," Eli Tayl told KXAN, witnessing the assault unfold. Another shopper, Monica Mandujano, described fleeing the mall in a panicked response, "We just ran with our kids as well, and they just took us out to the emergency doors."
Saturday's mall operations are anticipated to resume normalcy on Sunday, the mall representatives declared, leaving the areas impacted by the investigation cordoned off. The Austin Police maintain this was "an isolated incident," with the investigation into the shooting continuing, Austin Police Department elaborated in statements obtained by media outlets. The fear that gripped those present during the chaos are testament not just to the danger that unfolded but also to the all-too-familiar rush to escape perceived threats in public spaces.
