A man is dead after officers responding to a report of shots fired found him unconscious in the roadway on the 2900 block of John Porter Drive Saturday morning, according to the Killeen Police Department. Officers arrived at the scene at approximately 10:07 a.m. and located the victim suffering from a gunshot wound, and detectives with the Criminal Investigations Division are now investigating what has been confirmed as a fatal shooting.
The Killeen Police Department said in its initial post on Facebook that officers responded to the address after receiving reports of shots fired, where they found the unconscious male lying in the roadway with a gunshot wound. Local station KWTX News 10 reported Saturday that the shooting resulted in at least one confirmed fatality, escalating the incident from an injury call to a fatal shooting investigation. KWTX reporter Adam Schindler was on scene at the block to speak directly with investigating law enforcement officials as the case developed.
Scene Sits Blocks From Two Schools
The 2900 block of John Porter Drive falls within the Brookhaven subdivision, a Killeen neighborhood in the 76543 ZIP code made up mostly of single-family homes built in the mid-2000s, according to real estate records from Kelly, Realtors. The address sits less than half a mile from both Brookhaven Elementary School and Rancier Middle School, giving the shooting added weight for families in the surrounding residential streets.
Despite the proximity to schools and homes, police have characterized the shooting as an isolated incident that does not pose a known threat to the broader community. No arrests have been announced, and detectives with the department's Robbery-Homicide Unit, which handles major violent crime investigations across Bell County according to KilleenPD News, have not released information about a suspect, vehicle, or any surveillance footage tied to the case. Killeen police said they will provide updates as additional information becomes available.
Investigation Unfolds in a Growing City
Killeen reached an estimated population of 164,027 as of December 2025 amid ongoing residential growth, according to City of Killeen data. The police department serving that growing population operates with 342 members and an authorized strength of 260 sworn officers, per the city's own figures, patrolling the municipal area adjacent to Fort Cavazos.
If detectives identify a suspect and murder charges are filed, Texas Penal Code Section 19.02 classifies murder as a first-degree felony carrying a potential sentence of 5 to 99 years or life in prison, along with a fine of up to $10,000, according to the Barnett Howard & Williams PLLC law firm. Texas law does not divide murder into numerical degrees the way some other states do.
This is not the first time this year that Killeen police have worked to solve a street-level fatal shooting. An out-of-state arrest followed a March shooting on North Gray Street that left a 37-year-old man dead, with a 47-year-old suspect ultimately apprehended in Oklahoma with help from out-of-state sheriff's deputies.
