In San Antonio earlier today, a man was found asleep inside a red truck amid a heavy police presence that included a SWAT team and emergency medical responders. According to KSAT, the incident was triggered when a 7-Eleven employee noticed the man unresponsive in his vehicle at around 6 a.m. near Fair Avenue and Interstate 37.
The situation escalated quickly, with emergency responders retracting immediately after spotting the man with a firearm. In an attempt to not only ensure public safety but also to extract the man, the police had to completely surround the vehicle and shut down the surrounding area. SWAT was summoned and arrived to confront the standstill, employing a set of maneuvers designed to elicit a response from the slumbering figure.
"SWAT officers surrounded the truck, yelled at him in English and Spanish over a loudspeaker, sounded off their sirens and fired off a concussion grenade," SAPD spokesman Washington Moscoso conveyed to KSAT. Nonetheless, it took forcibly entering the vehicle to finally awaken the suspect, who was surprisingly unharmed despite the bullet holes riddling the truck.
The discovery within the truck led to a more disconcerting scene as, according to reports by Fox San Antonio, aside from the firearm, authorities located a package that appeared to contain illegal substances. Moscoso indicated that the vehicle seemed to have been stolen. Adding to the gravity of the situation, the man is believed to potentially have outstanding warrants.
After hours of tension, the scene was cleared and the roads reopened. As of yet, the man's identity has not been publicly released and the full extent of the charges awaiting him is unclear. The investigation into the event and the substances found is ongoing. This incident draws attention once more to the unpredictable nature of routine calls that can rapidly escalate into serious public safety emergencies.
