South Los Angeles was jolted awake by the echo of gunshots that left one man dead on the cold pavement. The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) is now turning to the community in a bid to untangle the threads of a homicide that claimed the life of Obet Garcia-Ortega, a 41-year-old Hispanic man.
According to the LAPD, the haunting melody of sirens broke the night's silence on November 30 when patrol officers from the 77th Division responded to an emergency call. They arrived at West Gage Avenue and Hoover Street around 2:30 a.m., only to find that the streets had become a stage for an unspecified tragedy; despite their efforts and those of the summoned paramedics from the Los Angeles Fire Department, Garcia-Ortega was pronounced dead.
The South Bureau Homicide Division issued a call for aid, seeking out those with knowledge to step forward. Anyone harboring valuable information can reach out to the detectives at (323) 786-5100.
