Border agents made a fiery bust at the Otay Mesa Cargo Facility when they unearthed over $10 million worth of drugs disguised as a shipment of jalapeno paste. The CBP reports the stealthy discovery happened on December 13 when a 28-year-old male truck driver had his cargo referred for a more thorough check.
Officials were able to quickly and deftly move to examine the goods more closely after a K-9 unit unexpectedly alerted them. It was during this secondary inspection that officers struck hot, uncovering 349 packages laced with the vats of the spicy condiment. These were later tested to contain significant quantities of methamphetamine, weighing in at 3,161.43 pounds, and cocaine, tipping the scales at 522.50 pounds.
The ingenious yet illicit plan fell through as the vigilant CBP officers extracted the packages, with the event demonstrating the depth and audacity of drug smuggling tactics. “Our K-9 teams are an invaluable component of our counter-narcotics operations," stated Rosa Hernandez, Otay Mesa Port Director. She further emphasized the importance of the operation by adding, "providing a reliable and unequaled mobile detection capability,” according to the official CBP press release.
The estimated street value of these drugs is a whopping $10,430,000, a sobering reminder of the high-stakes game being played at the borders. The driver, whose identity has yet to be confirmed publicly, was turned over to Homeland Security Investigations to delve deeper into the intricate web of this drug trafficking attempt. Along with the narcotics, the commercial tractor-trailer was also seized by the officers involved.
