In a joint operation between the Springfield Police Department's Firearms Investigation Unit and the Massachusetts State Police, a search warrant executed early yesterday morning led to the arrest of two individuals on Nottingham Street, Springfield. Among the arrested was a Springfield police officer, escalating concerns about law enforcement's involvement in illegal activities, as reported by the Springfield Police Department.
The raid, carried out around 6:15 a.m., yielded a cache of drugs and firearms. The officers discovered an illegally loaded firearm and various drugs, including approximately 10 bags of heroin, 10 grams of cocaine, and 100 grams of marijuana. One of the arrested, Anthony Tavernier, a 24-year-old Springfield local, faces multiple charges for possession of a firearm without a license and intent to distribute Class A, B, and D drugs.
Alongside Tavernier, 26-year-old Miranda Caldwell was also arrested and charged with multiple firearm and drug distribution violations. Crucially, one of the allegations includes reckless endangerment of a child, deepening the severity of the case. As noted in the Springfield Police press release, Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl Clapprood has suspended Caldwell for five days without pay.
The Springfield Police Department is taking measures to address the incident, as Caldwell's arrest has been reported to the POST Commission. Superintendent Clapprood's decision on the suspension represents the strongest disciplinary action within her authority. Further details of the case and the formal booking photos will be available following the arraignment of the arrested parties in the Springfield District Court.
