The San Antonio Spurs endured yet another defeat, falling 114-95 to the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night. The Spurs' rookie sensation, Victor Wembanyama, only managed to notch seven points and five rebounds, a performance certainly below the lofty expectations fans have for the towering French phenom. According to Fox San Antonio, Wembanyama played for 22 minutes, following a setback with a sore right ankle that caused him to miss the previous game.
Despite the throbbing ankle, Wembanyama, after the game, insisted, "My ankle is fine, I don't feel it at all," stating that it was just one of those nights. The disappointing evening followed a cheerful pre-game interaction with NHL No. 1 draft pick, Connor Bedard of the Chicago Blackhawks. The star-studded encounter was one of the few highlights for Wembanyama, who termed it a "great experience," in a statement obtained by Fox San Antonio. It was a sharp contrast to his subpar outing where the rookie failed to make a significant mark on the game.
The Bulls, on the other hand, had a field day with Coby White leading the scoring charge with 22 points, and DeMar DeRozan adding 21 of his own. Despite lagging in three-point efficiency for most of the game, the Bulls picked up the pace in the fourth quarter. White alone put in 12 points during the final period, securing a comfortable victory for Chicago without the services of their sidelined teammate, Zach LaVine. Meanwhile, San Antonio's Devin Vassell topped their scoring with 21 points, as noted by KENS 5.
With this latest loss, the Spurs’ record crumbles to 4-23 this season, further cementing their status at the bottom of the league standings. Their losing streak has stretched to three games, with the team looking to recalibrate before their next outing against the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night. "We never gave up, we never let the life flow out of us or anything like that," White said, emphasizing the team's resilience in an interview with Fox San Antonio.
For the Bulls, the win signifies a momentum build-up as they've now clinched eight victories in their last 11 games. The Bulls' next steps, and the potential return of LaVine, remain a focal point as they continue to climb the Eastern Conference ladder. Billy Donovan, Bulls’ coach told the press, "LaVine will have to get some practices in," hinting at a cautious but optimistic approach towards his player's recovery according to Fox San Antonio.
