In Weston, on Thursday, a woman’s car became an unintended target for flying metal debris, according to law enforcement officials. A piece of steel slammed through the windshield of the 35-year-old’s vehicle while she was behind the wheel along Route 20, smashing into her head and causing her to rear-end another car, CBS Boston reported.
Despite the sudden impact, which led to what police described as a "serious laceration" to the head of the driver, the woman took control of her car, bringing it to a stop, but not before the vehicle trailing her crashed into her rear bumper. There were two passengers accompanying the stricken driver, who walked away without physical harm, a police account detailed by Boston 25 News said. Another motorist also fell victim to the same metallic culprit, causing a flat tire.
The driver was transported to Lahey Hospital in Burlington, where she remains with serious but non-life-threatening injuries. The Weston Police Department, led by Police Chief Denis Linehan, is spearheading an investigation to pin down the origin of the dangerous projectile. "You're responsible for your vehicle and you're responsible if things fall from your vehicle," Linehan urged in a statement, underscoring the accountability vehicle owners must adhere to, as obtained by CBS Boston.
Authorities believe the metal may have been part of a truck's undercarriage, Chief Linehan revealed. "It's a structural type of situation. And that's why we get our vehicles inspected; there's a reason why that happens," the police chief continued, according to Boston 25 News.
Though no charges have been announced, the investigation is active, and officials are appealing for anyone with information to come forth.
