The theft was reported after the owner heard a bang and saw the vehicle being driven off, leaving behind a trail of tools scattered along the roadway – a clear indicator of the haste and recklessness under which the theft occurred.

Responding swiftly, the San Rafael Police found the abandoned utility truck, the engine still running, on the crossroads of Jewel Avenue and Ridge Avenue, 15 minutes after the initial report. The tools inside were partially plundered, and the ignition was tampered with, yet no culprit was in sight, the San Rafael PD elaborates on the night's unsettling events.
While the Federal Bureau of Investigation's statistics show that over 600,000 vehicles are taken each year across the country, the SRPD has taken this incident as an opportunity to relay preventive recommendations to the public. Suggestions include locking doors, removing keys from ignition, and not storing spare keys near vehicles, aiming to curb the alarming rate at which vehicular theft strikes, as the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates such a crime happens every 32 seconds in the United States.
The SRPD shared a number of deterrents, notably steering wheel locks, audible alarms, immobilizer systems, and tracking devices, as tactics to thwart would-be thieves, additionally suggesting common sense practices such as not leaving valuables in plain view and parking in well-lit areas to maintain sightlines and enhance vehicle security.
