An officer-involved shooting left a suspect critically wounded after a high-speed chase that concluded in Hacienda Heights on Saturday, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department. Officials reported that the 51-year-old Hispanic male suspect, allegedly involved in an earlier road rage incident, rammed his vehicle into several Huntington Park police cars, which led officers to open fire.
The pursuit began near the Huntington Park police station and spiraled into a desperate escape, eventually forcing the suspect to frantically swerve onto various streets and a freeway. The chase came to an abrupt end at the 15400 block of Garo Street, where the man attempted to use his vehicle as a battering ram against law enforcement, thus triggering the shooting. The suspect was quickly taken to a local hospital suffering a gunshot wound to the upper body and is currently listed in critical but stable condition, as per the statement released by the Sheriff's Information Bureau.
During the encounter, one Huntington Park Police Department officer sustained a minor injury. With no one else harmed or involved, the focus has turned to piecing together the sequence of events. "Homicide investigators are in the early stages of the investigation," read the official release, signaling the beginning of a meticulous process to unravel the facts behind the near-deadly engagement.
Multiple inquiries have been launched, with oversight from entities such as the Internal Affairs Bureau and the Office of the Inspector General.
