Chaos erupted on the streets of Encinitas when a suspected DUI driver led deputies on a dangerous chase that ended in a multi-car crash. According to a release from the San Diego County Sheriff's Department, the incident began yesterday just past 9:15 p.m. A deputy from the North Coastal Sheriff's Station spotted a black Toyota Corolla that was straddling lanes and appeared to be operated by an intoxicated driver.
Refusing to stop for traffic enforcement, the driver initiated a pursuit that cut a reckless path onto Northbound Interstate 5 and through surface streets, blatantly running red lights and, at times, driving on the wrong side. Although the deputy abandoned the high-speed chase and failed to yield, the reckless driver continued to be monitored from a distance.
The night took a turn for the worse as the deputy found the same Toyota Corolla involved in a collision at the intersection of La Costa Ave and El Camino Real. The crash involved two additional vehicles, one driven by a 41-year-old man who sustained minor injuries and the other by an 18-year-old male with a passenger of the same age, who both escaped harm.
As first responders tended to the scene, it emerged that the driver of the Corolla, 40-year-old Lindsey Roberts, was arrested not only for the chaos of the night but also for an outstanding felony arrest warrant, according to Sergeant Christi Ramirez of the North Coastal Sheriff's Station. Emergency crews had to extricate her from her wrecked vehicle, where she was trapped, before she was taken to a local hospital with potentially broken bones.
Authorities are peeling back the layers of this incident as Sheriff's Deputies take the lead on the criminal investigation and the Carlsbad Police Department handles the traffic collision analysis. Anyone with information related to this case is urged to reach out to Sergeant Ramirez at the North Coastal Sheriff's Station by calling (760) 966-3500.
