In a tragic turn of events, a young woman from San Diego saw her life changed forever after becoming a victim of a gang-related shooting. The 19-year-old suspect, Juan Diaz Velazco, recently pleaded not guilty to the serious charges brought against him. Velazco, identified as a gang member, faces charges of attempted murder and additional firearms offenses in connection with the October incident that left a 17-year-old cheerleader paralyzed. If found guilty, he could be sentenced to a maximum of 72 years to life in prison, as announced by the San Diego County District Attorney's Office.
The incident unfolded shortly before 1 a.m. on October 28 outside a high school party in the Talmadge neighborhood, leading to a confrontation between rival factions. Velazco, allegedly a member of one of the gangs involved, claimed innocence in the courtroom, denying his involvement in the shooting. The gunfire, meant for rival gang members, inadvertently struck the 17-year-old girl in the back. Juan Diaz Velazco is currently held without bail and recently had his arraignment. He is scheduled for a readiness hearing on December 12, followed by a preliminary hearing on December 15.
