A 13-year-old boy's reckless decision turned into a near-tragedy when he jumped into a canal in Northwest Miami-Dade and nearly drowned, authorities said. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue units were called to a home near 181 NW 85th Street, where the teen reportedly took a dangerous leap into the water yesterday. Despite the perilous situation, rescue divers managed to pull him from the canal, marking another harrowing water incident in the area.
The boy, identified by WSVN as Cameron, was said to have jumped in even after being advised against it. "He went down, he came up, he was asking for help, he went back down again, he came back up again, he was asking for help again, and then he went back down again,” recounted Monte Hartage, the victim's neighbor, to WSVN. The status of his condition remained undisclosed.
As emergency responders rushed to the scene, footage captured divers working diligently to recover the youth, who was subsequently transported to Ryder Trauma for medical attention. The urgency on the faces of the paramedics as they performed CPR brought back the gravity of water safety in the region.
The boy's family was thrust into a state of uncertainty. "I'm not sure what happened," said the victim's aunt in a statement obtained by NBC Miami. The emotional strain was heightened by the fact that the child's mother was still mourning the loss of another son three years earlier. In a heartbreaking revelation, the aunt reported that the medical team confirmed the boy had a pulse and was stabilized.
The incident serves as a solemn reminder of the never-ending responsibility parents and guardians face in educating and protecting their children from the hazards of water sources. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue and Miami-Dade Parks, as emphasized by authorities, remain devoted to providing resources and lessons to prevent these life-threatening events from recurring in the community.
