Chaos ensued at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on Sunday when a bomb threat caused the evacuation of Terminal 1, creating a massive traffic jam and delaying flights for hours. The Broward Sheriff’s Office Airport District deputies arrived on scene around 5:26 p.m. to handle the threat, as per CBS News Miami. Terminal operations were swiftly disrupted when an airline employee reported overhearing a passenger claim to have a bomb.
Traffic outside the airport ground to a standstill, with harried travelers unable to do anything but watch the entrance to FLL and eastbound Interstate 595 turn into parking lots. "We were sitting there in the Uber for about an hour," a flyer vented in an interview obtained by WSVN 7News. The scramble to safely inspect the situation resulted in passengers bracing for missed connections and last-minute itinerary upheavals.
Officials eventually detained 27-year-old Tyler Baeder from Rhode Island, who was struggling with a kiosk during check-in when he made the alarming statement. The BSO Bomb Squad was called to meticulously inspect Baeder's belongings, ultimately deeming the threat baseless. Baeder was subsequently arrested, facing charges including "false reporting concerning planting a bomb, explosive, or weapon of mass destruction" and one count of "resisting an officer without violence," as revealed by CBS News Miami.
After thorough investigation, authorities were able to give the all-clear three hours post-evacuation, allowing airport operations to cautiously restart. Amidst the uncertainty and frustration, some travelers managed to find a shred of patience. "I'm sure the flights will adjust, right? To allow us to board, so there's no stress. I’d rather us be safe," another passenger shared with WSVN 7News. Regardless, the day's itinerary for many was thrown into disarray, with departure monitors lighting up with delays. "We live in a crazy world," a traveler remarked, summing up the sentiment of many as normalcy tentatively returned to FLL.
