A Texas man found guilty of manslaughter will serve six months in jail for the fatal shooting of an unarmed man in 2021. Terry Turner, of Martindale, was sentenced in Caldwell County for shooting 31-year-old Adil Dghoughi, who had pulled into his driveway. In a ruling that has caused considerable discussion, Turner will initially serve 140 days and then complete the remaining 40 days in four-day increments to coincide with the anniversary of the shooting and Dghoughi's birthday, San Antonio Express-News reported.
Turner, 67, originally faced a first-degree murder charge but was convicted on the lesser charge of manslaughter on Nov. 3. The jury gave him a 10-year suspended sentence, which State District Judge Chris Schneider later detailed as 10 years' probation, 400 hours of community service, therapy sessions, and limited travel, according to KXAN. In a poignant courtroom moment, Dghoughi's brother Othmane addressed Turner, saying, "You thought you were a man because you had a gun. A man is not the one who has a gun; a man is the one who helps his family."
Turner will also be subjected to GPS monitoring for a year and must pay a $10,000 fine. He is barred from leaving Caldwell County and its adjacent regions until his sentence is fully served. Othmane Dghoughi fiercely critiqued the Caldwell County officials and the court system, accusing them of failing to deliver justice by stating, "You got a lot of help from this county. You got away with this murder. Shame on this county," San Antonio Express-News reported.
The case, which drew international attention and advocacy group outcry, stemmed from events on October 11, 2021. Turner, testifying at the trial, believed his home was being targeted when he saw an unfamiliar car in his driveway and armed himself. In a fatal judgment, Turner fired at Dghoughi as the latter was trying to reverse out of the driveway. Prosecutors argued that Turner’s actions were unreasonable as no gun or other weapon was found with Dghoughi. Still, Turner's defense claimed he feared for his life and was protecting his property, stating Turner thought he saw a weapon aimed at him before he discharged his firearm.
The aftermath has left Dghoughi's family grappling with an unfillable void. His mother, Fatiha Haouass, traveled from Morocco for the trial. "The life of every member of the family has collapsed," she stated, expressing her son's pride in his adopted country and the ongoing struggle to accept the reality of his absence, as reported by Express-News.
