A deadly rampage that spanned two Texas cities left six people dead and two officers injured. Police now have the suspect in custody, having connected a series of violent acts across Austin and San Antonio. According to CBS Austin, the chain of events began with the shooting of an Austin ISD police officer and ended with a police chase that resulted in the suspect's arrest and subsequent charge of capital murder.
Shortly before noon on Tuesday, officers received calls about gunshots on Shadywood Drive in South Austin, where a man and a woman were killed in a brutal attack described by FOX 7 Austin. Eyewitness reports suggest the suspect first shot a handyman through his car window and subsequently chased and killed a woman trying to understand what had happened. In what seemed like a chillingly methodical crime, the suspect left with the handyman's car after the murders.
Later that day, the spree continued with an officer-involved shooting near Southwest Austin's Austral Loop. A call about a burglary at around 6:48 p.m. led to the discovery of two more victims. In a confrontation with the responding officers, the suspect shot an officer multiple times before fleeing and being apprehended after a brief chase. "I'd like to express my deepest condolences to all the victims and their families who have been affected by the series of tragic events and horrific criminal acts," Austin Police Chief Robin Henderson told CBS Austin.
The suspect is also linked to an incident in Bexar County near San Antonio, where earlier on the same day, two more victims were found dead. In custody, the man in his 30s faces charges of capital murder and an outstanding assault warrant, having been stopped near Southwest State Highway 45 and FM 1826. Caught after crashing during a pursuit with officers, the suspect took part in a spate of violence that spread fear and sorrow across Texas communities.
As the investigations unfold, a protocol-driven administrative duty placement awaits the Austin police officer who returned fire during the encounter with the man accused of multiple murders. The Austin Police Department and the local Sheriff's office, alongside the community they serve, grapple with the staggering toll of a single day's violence. Anyone with further information is urged to contact the APD, or Capital Area Crime Stoppers, as the city reconciles the aftermath of a multi-city shooting spree.
