An alarming incident at Granbury Middle School led to the hospitalization of eight students Tuesday after they consumed candy that was suspected to contain narcotics. According to a letter sent to parents by Granbury Middle School Principal Dr. Andy Smith, which was obtained by WFAA, the candy was provided by another student and was initially believed to contain THC, the psychoactive component of cannabis.
Although the candy tested negative for THC, additional testing is underway as part of the ongoing investigation led by Granbury ISD and local police. Dr. Smith's commitment to student safety was evident in his statement, which stressed the significance of guardians conversing with their children about the dangers of ingesting unknown substances. "It is crucial that we have open and honest conversations with our children about making responsible choices and being cautious when it comes to accepting or consuming anything unfamiliar," he stated, per WFAA.
Two students involved in the incident, Hannah and Victoria, both 13, described their adverse reactions after eating the questionable candy. "It tasted like toothpaste and it was really disgusting," Hannah said after being told that the candy was a gift from her classmate's grandmother. Symptoms such as dizziness, a racing heart, and even fainting were experienced among the affected students, prompting urgent medical attention, as per WFAA.
The parents were understandably shaken by the ordeal. Kimberly, Hannah's mother, recounted the terrifying moment she was informed her daughter was unresponsive. "It was a very scary moment. I thought I was going to lose my child," she expressed. Despite initial uncertainty, one ER doctor's early assessment suspected fentanyl might be involved, although definitive results are pending, as reported by WFAA.
The incident has left other Granbury Middle School parents on edge. Desirae Blackerby, a parent at the school, voiced her alarm: "It’s so scary. I wouldn’t know what to do if [my son] just took a piece of candy from his friend and then he was in the hospital." The Granbury Middle School administration, recognizing the gravity of the matter, has called upon the school community to report any suspicious behavior and reaffirmed their dedication to a safe educational environment, as reported by NBC DFW.
