A truck driver survived a harrowing ordeal Saturday morning after his tractor-trailer went careening over the side of the Beeline Highway overpass onto Florida's Turnpike. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue spokesperson, Capt. Tom Reyes, said the driver was swiftly taken to a trauma center as a precaution following the incident that occurred in rainy conditions, as reported by WPTV.
The accident, which took place at the mile marker 107 exit, not only disrupted traffic on the adjoining highways but also led to a visual spectacle with the truck cab dangling precariously in the air. Palm Beach County Fire Rescue and Palm Beach Gardens Fire Rescue were quickly at the scene around 8:15 a.m. and were able to successfully extract the driver by 9:06 a.m., as confirmed by Capt. Reyes. Despite the chaos, the driver was "awake and aware," managing to walk from the bucket of the ladder truck to a stretcher under his power, as per NBC 6.
Images and video capturing the truck hanging off the overpass went viral on social media shortly after the fire rescue agency posted them online. The impact of the crash was exacerbated as it led to two additional crashes on the turnpike's southbound side, which were attributed to drivers distracted by the scene and trying to take cellphone videos of the incident, Reyes said, per NBC 6.
Travelers found themselves in lengthy backups, with the northbound lanes of the turnpike congested for hours following the crash. Authorities recommended motorists use the Okeechobee exit when traveling northbound to avoid the holdup. The extensive emergency response, including tow trucks and ladder units, appeared to finally clear the scene as the vehicle, laden with scrap metal, was to be carefully extricated from its precarious position above the roadway.
