Tragedy struck southern Minnesota early Saturday when a head-on collision claimed the lives of two men from New Ulm. According to FOX 9, the incident occurred around 2:30 a.m. on Highway 15 in Brown County, where authorities say a 33-year-old man in a Dodge Dart was driving southbound as a 28-year-old man in a Jeep Grand Cherokee was traveling north. The two vehicles violently collided, resulting in a fatal scene.
Both drivers, identified as Luis Perez, 28, and Aaron Gronau, 33, were pronounced dead at the location of the crash. The Minnesota State Patrol reported that while Gronau was safeguarded by a seatbelt, Perez was not. Ambiguous at this point, investigators are yet to decisively determine what played a role in the catastrophic event, such as alcohol. However, CBS News Minnesota noted wet conditions on the road that may have been a contributing factor.
The violent nature of the collision prompted a thorough investigation by the Minnesota State Patrol, who are meticulously combing through the details of the case.
