A tragic hit-and-run near DFW Airport has left one woman dead and another injured on what was supposed to be a busy travel day leading up to the holidays. The incident occurred last night around 8 p.m. on International Parkway near Highway 183, where 57-year-old Susan Simmons, now identified by the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, was waiting for a tow truck alongside her companion, NBC DFW reported.
While Simmons and the second victim, whose name has not been released, were waiting helplessly for roadside assistance, a vehicle hit them, the car that struck them did not stay to face the repercussions, fleeing the scene instead. Fort Worth police were originally responding to a call to assist the stranded motorists when they discovered both had been struck. Simmons died from her injuries, while the second victim is expected to survive, according to the Fort Worth Star-Telegram.
The police's investigation into this hit-and-run is ongoing, though no information regarding the identity of the driver or the vehicle involved has been released yet. Simmons' untimely death was confirmed by the medical examiner, noting that she succumbed to multiple blunt force trauma injuries on an embankment next to the roadway and was pronounced dead at 9:05 p.m.
Familial grief emerges in the shadow of holiday cheer, each victim once en route to some essential destination, the warmth of family, the comfort of friends; now, Susan Simmons' family is deprived of her presence by an act of grave irresponsibility and disregard. "The moment you don't stop and flee the scene then that becomes a criminal offense. We advise drivers if you are involved in an accident, stay. Stay there and help and participate in the investigation. Don't leave. We understand accidents happen but please stay on the scene,” Fort Worth Police Officer Daniel Segura lamented in a plea for civic duty and compassion, NBC DFW reported.
