In a chase down Worcester's streets, a man suspected of drug trafficking tried to ditch the evidence before being cuffed near a local watering hole. Carlos Torres, 53, of Main St., was arrested on Tuesday after a Worcester Police officer's keen eye led to an unexpected car chase and the discovery of a stash of narcotics, as per Worcester Police Department.
The incident kicked off around 1:19 PM when an officer, patrolling the Austin St area, checked a parked Acura that had plates registered for a Ford truck, finding Torres asleep in the driver's seat who then refused to shut off the engine and sped off, dragging the officer along for a brief moment. Torres, in a bid to flee, started to throw bags out the window and attempted to shove more down a sewer drain once he stopped close to Joey’s Bar and Grill on Chandler St.
Backup officers arriving at the scene seized bags suspected to contain cocaine and heroin, as well as other bags filled with white powder pending analysis; packaging materials and a double-edged knife were also found. According to a Worcester Police Department press release, Torres now faces a slew of charges, including Assault with a Dangerous Weapon (car), Trafficking in a Class B Substance, Possession of a Class A Substance with Intent to Distribute (2nd or subsequent), and several motor vehicle offenses, among others.
The arresting officer, walked away from the encounter without serious injuries, Worcester PD explained how Torres didn't just lead police on a chase, but he also blatantly disregarded the law by adding to his rap sheet, Resisting Arrest, Tampering with Or Destroying Evidence, this encounter highlighting the dangers law enforcement face and the lengths to which individuals will go to evade capture.
