After over 30 years of dead ends, the mystery of a 1991 New Bedford, Massachusetts homicide has finally been solved. The Bristol County District Attorney's Office has confirmed the identity of the killer as Claudio Jorge, in a case that had left investigators searching for answers for decades.
Jorge, who was known only as "Bobby" in initial reports of the crime, was implicated in the fatal shooting of 20-year-old Brent Davis at the Brickenwood Housing Project. According to WHDH, investigators restarted the cold case in 2020 and through a series of interviews with witnesses and relatives unearthed new details connecting Jorge to the crime.
Critical testimony came from a witness, who told authorities that he sold cocaine with Jorge back in 1991, and saw Jorge right after Davis was killed. "Once inside the apartment, 'Bobby' stated that Davis was dead and that he needed to get out of town," said Bristol County District Attorney Thomas Quinn, as reported by WCVB. A composite sketch, together with photos provided by a relative of Jorge, helped validate the witnesses' identification of the suspect.
Jorge, who was deported back to the Dominican Republic in 1998 after a stint in New York, was reportedly killed during a robbery in 2006. This detail was confirmed by a relative and further backed by an obituary card, as NBC Boston reports. Investigators worked with New York Police Department officials and utilized criminal records to piece together Jorge's history of narcotics and weapons offenses.
With Jorge's identification, a long-wait closure has been provided to the case and to Davis' family. The New Bedford cold case, a story of an elusive suspect, and decades of weary searching, has reached its final chapter with official confirmation of Jorge's actions and his subsequent death. "At this point, all investigatory avenues have been exhausted to confirm that Claudio Jorge committed the homicide by firearm of Brent Davis on October 25, 1991, and Jorge is deceased," the Bristol County District Attorney's office stated in a final note of resolution.
