A 65-year-old San Diego man lost his life last week when he was hit by a vehicle as he crossed a busy street in the Midway District.

The victim, identified as Rufino Canete, was struck around 6:59 p.m. on Jan. 2 while traversing Midway Drive, FOX 5 San Diego reported. The crash occurred near the intersection of Midway Drive and Sports Arena Boulevard; Canete had stopped at the center divider to let northbound traffic pass before being hit by a Chevrolet pickup truck, with a 62-year-old woman at the wheel.

The San Diego County Medical Examiner's Office identified Canete and announced his death on its website, stating that the cause of death was multiple blunt force injuries. There were no contributing conditions, and the manner of death was ruled an accident.

The driver who struck Canete immediately called 911 and cooperated with the authorities at the scene, as per the San Diego Police Department (SDPD). Despite the lifesaving measures performed by the first responders, Canete was pronounced dead - the aftermath of an ordinary day cleaved by tragedy.

Authorities have not raised suspicion of DUI in the case, and the Traffic Division of the SDPD is looking into the collision. Law enforcement officials have encouraged witnesses to come forward with information in their search for more facts. Officer David Surwilo, a Community Relations Officer with the SDPD, indicated the preliminary details of the crash, and according to Hoodline, any individuals with insights about the incident are urged to contact Crime Stoppers at 888-580-8477.
