Alamo Drafthouse is dialing back the clock with its "Alamo Time Capsules" film series, a cinematic journey through some of the most iconic years in the history of film. Starting this January, you can catch legendary flicks such as "The Goonies" and "The Iron Giant," along with a host of other classics at any of Alamo's 40 national theaters, reported by KXAN.
Curated to pass the torch of cinematic excellence across generations, the screenings spotlight 150 films from pivot years like 1999, 1994, and even way back to 1974, each period will find audiences reveling in the creativity and spirit of its time, Alamo Drafthouse's website says but don't just expect a run-of-the-mill theatre experience – this series promises merchandise, themed menus, and special events to enhance the blast from the past, as per KXAN.
1999 holds a special place in the hearts of film buffs and the senior film programmer at Alamo Drafthouse, John Smith, echoes this sentiment, "My first job was making popcorn and tearing tickets at a second run movie theater in 1999, and I was lucky enough to get to see everything from that wild year of cinema, from 'Blair Witch' to 'Magnolia' to 'She’s All That' again and again and again," Smith told Variety. The nostalgia-infused line-up begins with the revolutionary "The Matrix", and continues with gems like "Cruel Intentions" and "Being John Malkovich", according to Variety.
The series is more than just film screenings; it's a cultural exhibit on celluloid, embracing the historical and cinematic staples that defined eras. So whether you're in for a dose of "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom" nostalgia or ready to rock out with "Purple Rain," the "Alamo Time Capsules" is the theatre biopic you didn't know you needed, and certainly one you don't want to miss.
