Alleged kingpin Wilder Emilio Sanchez Farfan, also known as 'Gato', was carted from Colombia to face a U.S. court yesterday on serious charges of international drug trafficking. According to a statement obtained by the Justice Department, Sanchez Farfan pleaded not guilty and is currently being held in custody, with a follow-up hearing penned for early March.
The indictment alleges that Sanchez Farfan's network was a significant cocaine supplier for the notorious Sinaloa and New Generation Jalisco Cartels. The operation spanned continents, from Colombia, through Ecuador and up into the lanes of the United States. The Ecuadorian national found himself in handcuffs after Colombian officials snatched him up on a U.S. request last February.

At his initial court appearance, Sanchez Farfan was met with the reality that he is potentially facing a lifetime behind bars with a mandatory minimum stretch of a decade in the clink. He stood before U.S. Magistrate Judge Barbara L. Major and aligned himself with a not-guilty stance in the San Diego federal court.
U.S. Attorney Tara K. McGrath praised the collaborative efforts of law enforcement from Colombia and Ecuador, alluding to their significant role in reeling in Sanchez Farfan. The Office of International Affairs and judicial attaches in the Bogota U.S. Embassy were also hailed for their key assistance in the extradition process.
Assistant U.S. Attorneys Kyle Martin and Ashley Goff are taking the reins of the prosecution, staring down one of the alleged heavy hitters in transnational narcotics. While Sanchez Farfan holds to his not-guilty plea, the stakes could not be higher as the wheels of justice grind onward toward the March 4 hearing in front of U.S. District Judge Gonzalo P. Curiel. Until then, the defendant remains tangled in the legal web, far from the northern Andean slopes and the trafficking routes alleged to have once been his dominion.
