As the mercury plummets, local warming stations are opening their doors in Allen to help those caught in the cold snap. The McKinney Emergency Overnight Warming Station (MEOWS), nestled in the heart of the McKinney Corps Community Center, is a beacon of hope for those without shelter, providing a warm place to stay, with no ID necessary and a pet-friendly policy. Intake times are from 6-10 p.m., and MEOWS will keep its doors open until Tuesday, Jan. 16 due to anticipated inclement conditions. Citizens in need of transportation can text for a possible ride at (214) 945-4637, according to the City of Allen.
A stone's throw away, the Plano Corps Community Center is also offering a reprieve from the frosty weather. It kicks into action when temperatures nosedive to 35° with a 20% chance of precipitation, or if a chilling 32° or lower is expected. Their doors open from 6:30-10 p.m. for overnight intake.
For those in the neighborhood, the warm embrace of MEOWS can be found at 600 Wilson Creek Pkwy., McKinney, TX 75069, and can be reached at (972) 542-6694 for more information. Plano Corps Community Center is located on 14th St., Plano, TX 75074, with a direct line at (972) 423-8254, standing ready to guide anyone through the bitter days and colder nights.
In these frostbitten times, when the clutches of winter hold tight, community centers like MEOWS, and the Plano Corps offer more than just warmth – they offer a temporary haven, a glimpse of humanity's warmth in the face of nature's icy stare. As strangers become neighbors in the shared quest for comfort, the centers remind us of the collective effort in caring for the most vulnerable despite, the season's rime.
