In a candid speech that hit close to home for many attending students and faculty, Andy Wells brought wisdom and real-world experience to Northwest Technical College last Thursday. Wells, a Red Lake Nation member and founder of Wells Technology, kicked off an occupational speaker series, drawing a full house as he recounted the journey of transforming a simple two-car garage operation into a multi-million dollar enterprise. Wells highlighted the indispensability of education and its role in laying the groundwork for future triumphs. "It really helps to get your foot in the door to have some basic education whether it’s high school, vocational or university," Wells stated in a speech reported by the Bemidji Pioneer.
The enterprising leader, whose company boasts an impressive catalog of over 24,000 products for clients like Boeing, NASA, and the Department of Defense, didn't just stop at founding Wells Technology. Understanding the need for skill development, Wells also pioneered the Wells Academy in 2009, dedicated to equipping individuals with the necessary industrial talents to further their careers. Moreover, by adding a new location in the Oshkiimaajitahdah building in Redby, the academy aimed to bolster the regional workforce, as Wells emphasized, "There’s so much opportunity up here in northern Minnesota and it’s so important for people to stay here" in comments noted by the Bemidji Pioneer.
Wells' story isn't just about building a successful business empire. His drive to forge paths for others is rooted in his own history. As a young man, Wells revolutionized snowmobile design at Polaris, which led to a model being named in his honor – the Lil Andy. Yet, the visionary chose to venture beyond, leaving the company to pursue teaching and, later, entrepreneurship. His commitment to empowering others manifested in the creation of Wells Academy, which offers free apprenticeships for Indigenous people, as reported by MPR News.
While fostering an environment for learning and growth has been a cornerstone of Wells' efforts, he encountered barriers early on when "employment-challenged applicants" struggled to find opportunities due to a lack of qualifications and other hurdles. Responding to this need, Wells recalled, "And I began teaching them one by one." This ethos has not only earned him respect and awards within the community but has fundamentally altered the lives of many, providing avenues for economic stability and making Wells a stalwart figure in both educational and industrial landscapes.
