Early Friday morning in Chicago, the calm of the Southwest Side was pierced by the chilling sequence of armed robberies, as two victims - a man and a woman - were targeted by assailants wielding firearms and a taste for quick theft. According to the Chicago Tribune, the first incident occurred shortly after 3 a.m. in the Lawndale neighborhood, where a man found himself face-to-face with three handgun-bearing individuals who demanded his belongings before they made their escape in a black sedan.
The brazen robberies continued unchecked as, within less than 10 minutes, the criminals set their focus on a woman in Little Village, the fear she experienced no doubt echoed by the earlier victim the woman, now facing the same dark sedan, the same cold glint of gunmetal, fraying the fabric of the community's sense of security. The Chicago Tribune reported that the robbers in both incidents used the cover of darkness and the anonymity provided by their nondescript vehicle to vanish into the night.
Finding connections in strings of crimes is a meticulous task for law enforcement, and in this case, Chicago police are probing the possibility of a link between the two events that shattered the early morning silence. CBS Chicago notes that the proximity in time and location of the two robberies - only half a mile apart - raises questions about whether the same group of four gunmen is responsible for both thefts.
In one instance, a woman on the street near Cermak Road and Keeler Avenue was relieved of her property at gunpoint. This chilling occurrence repeated minutes later when a man found himself equally defenseless near 26th and Keeler, according to CBS Chicago. Fortunately, in both cases, neither victim sustained physical injuries, yet the psychological toll and the disruption of peace remain unaccounted for as Area 4 detectives continue their investigation.
