A knife-wielding vandal is at large in Springfield, Mass., after deliberately deflating the wheels of Mayor Domenic J. Sarno's car. The brazen act of property damage occurred in broad daylight on a Tuesday afternoon, right outside City Hall. According to Boston 25 News, surveillance footage caught the suspect slashing all four tires on the mayor's vehicle.

The identity of the suspect remains unknown. Springfield Police have urged anyone who spots the individual not to try to engage with him, but to instead call 911 immediately. As reported by MassLive, Mayor Sarno expressed his grave concerns, stating "Take myself out of the picture, this is a serious act of violence with a deadly weapon...It is very concerning that someone is acting out like this and endangering the public."

The attack appears to be targeted at the mayor, as no other vehicles in proximity at City Hall suffered any damage. Mayor Sarno's car, a city-owned Ford sedan, has since been towed away for repairs, with all four tires too damaged to patch. William Baker, communications director for the mayor, told MassLive that the motivations behind the vandalism are unclear at this time. "He hasn’t been caught so we don’t know if he had a gripe with the mayor or something else," Baker said. "There are a lot of questions to be asked."

Springfield Police Superintendent Cheryl C. Clapprood has confirmed that an investigation is underway. In a show of confidence, Mayor Sarno said in a statement obtained by Masslive “I have the utmost confidence in our brave and dedicated men and women of the Springfield Police Department to find this individual and apprehend him before any other vehicles or property are damaged, or worse if he were to attack someone with this knife,”

The suspect has been described as a white man sporting tan pants, work boots, and a dark jacket with a hood that obscured part of his face. Authorities are reaching out to the community, asking anyone with information to come forward. They can call the police at 413-787-6355 or provide anonymous tips by texting CRIMES or 274637 and then typing SOLVE, followed by the information.
