The Atlanta Hawks are facing a significant setback as their standout guard Trae Young has been sidelined with a concussion, the team announced yesterday. Young was injured during a rough encounter with Cleveland Cavaliers' Isaac Okoro, which led to the player getting elbowed in the face and now he is out for an indefinite period, according to information from FOX 5 Atlanta.
In the Saturday night's mishap against the Cavaliers, Young was charged accidentally by Okoro and took an elbow to the face, resulting in his early exit with 8:43 left on the clock. Having put up 15 points before the incident, Young's absence could be felt as the Hawks ended up losing 116-95, with the team trailing by 25 when he walked to the locker room. Young has been a key player for the Hawks this season, clocking in an impressive average of 26.9 points per game and placing second in the league with 10.8 assists per game, as highlighted by The Washington Post.
The severity of Young's injury requires him to undergo the NBA's concussion protocol, which means he must be completely symptom-free before he can get back to basketball activities. This protocol ensures player safety but does not offer a set timetable for recovery.
The timing is less than ideal for the Hawks, who currently hold a 18-24 record and are preparing to face the Sacramento Kings on Monday night. The team's performance, already wobbling, is bound to feel the impact of Young's absence, given that he is a linchpin for the squad's offense. Without a clear return date, the Hawks must navigate through their upcoming games without their main playmaker, which leaves them in a precarious position in the ever-competitive NBA season.
