Aurora's Orthodox Christian community gathered this weekend for a sacred river ritual. The joint congregations of Saint Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church and St. Athanasius Romanian Orthodox Church made a pilgrimage to the Fox River. There, they celebrated the Holy Feast of Epiphany, known also as Theophany, with a Blessing of the Waters ceremony, a revered tradition in their faith.

According to coverage of the event, the festivities are rooted in the Orthodox celebration of Jesus' baptism, observed each year on January 6. After attending church services, participants including clergy, local figures, and believers marked the occasion by the riverside. Successively, a priest casts a cross into the flowing river as part of the ceremonious act.

The celebration was a first for Aurora's east side community, drawing about 100 individuals despite brisk Illinois winter conditions. Leading the ceremony were the Rev. Panagiotis Boznos from St. Athanasios Greek Orthodox Church and the Rev. Daniel Pop representing St. Athanasius Romanian Orthodox Church; their joint liturgy symbolized unity within the Orthodox traditions.

Footage and accounts from the scene depicted a solemn yet vibrant atmosphere, with attendees taking part in prayers and songs as the cross plunged into the new river.
