The City of Aurora is opening its doors at the Temporary Overnight Warming Center to protect residents against the harsh cold, officials announced. The warming center, a makeshift refuge for those facing the chill, is located at the Aurora Transportation Center, 233 N. Broadway.
With dangerously low temperatures expected to persist, the center, which started operating Saturday, January 13, will continue to welcome individuals from 7:00 p.m. to 7:00 a.m. until Monday, January 22. To provide more than just shelter, the city provides water, and snacks albeit not prepared meals, to those seeking warmth.
An online update shared by the City of Aurora stated that staff members or security guards would be present at all times, ensuring a secure environment overnight. This measure comes as part of the city's broader response to severe weather conditions, helping to prevent the life-threatening risks that come with subzero temperatures.
Residents and visitors alike can find solace in the warming center during these times when the frigid air grips the city. The activation of the center adheres to temperature-based protocols, ensuring that whenever the temperature thresholds are met, the safety doors will be open, a reassuring consistency in the face of winter's unpredictability, the City of Aurora confirmed.
