Austin FC wrapped up their preseason trip to St. Petersburg with some positive vibes, tucking a win and draw under their belt. As reported by KXAN, the Major League Soccer squad bested FC Cincinnati 2-1 last Friday, crediting goals to Valentin Noël and Sebastian Driussi, players who are looking to make their mark ahead of the new season.
During their preseason opener, Austin FC ended on even terms with a 1-1 tie against Philadelphia. In that match, Dani Pereira garnered attention with a standout goal, lighting up the pitch with an assist from Hector Jimenez, KXAN reported. Despite playing with a mixed squad, Austin FC showed glimpses of the form that could shape their coming season.
Austin FC's official website highlighted the contributions of the younger squad members, with Noël, an Austin FC II midfielder, heading in the opening goal against Cincinnati after a play set up by Jáder Obrian. The captain, Driussi, then sealed the deal in the second half, sliding a shot past the opposition's keeper, securing the win for a team eager to build on last year's successes.
Head Coach Josh Wolff is setting a tone for a turnaround. In an interview obtained by KXAN, he mentioned, "It's not going to just happen, he's got to drive it and we need to nurture it and help him continue to grow," addressing the potential surge in Pereira's development. Wolff is keen on pushing the players, fostering a culture where both tenured and new players mesh to solidify Austin FC's core values.
The camaraderie and culture Wolff and his players are striving for seems to be paying dividends, with defender Jon Gallagher commending the integration of Austin FC II players into the camp. "They’ve brought a good energy to training camp," Gallagher told KXAN, signaling a seamless transition and unity within the squad.
As the preseason marches on, Austin FC's next clash is against Louisville City FC, set for a February 3rd match-up as announced by Austin FC's website. The club will look to bolster their pre-season form before the official whistle blows for the 2024 season.
