The murder of Austin jeweler Ted Shaughnessy has resurfaced in the public eye as NBC's "Dateline" and CBS's "48 Hours" are set to air features on the chilling case. Ted Shaughnessy was fatally shot in his home on March 2, 2018, while his wife, Corey Shaughnessy, narrowly survived by firing back and hiding in a closet. The couple's son, Nicolas Shaughnessy, and his wife, Jaclyn Edison, initially moved into the home with the grieving Corey. Within three months, however, the plot twisted when the young couple was arrested on charges related to the murder.
According to an article by the Statesman, Nicolas Shaughnessy was born in Russia and was later adopted by Ted and Corey Shaughnessy, who had moved to Austin when he was a toddler. Neighbors and schoolmates of Nicolas observed his fascination with wealth and finance, which he openly discussed, including in a school newspaper article about his plans to rapidly get rich through day trading. Nicolas and Edison, both 18 at the time, secretly married and then relocated to College Station, before the tragic events.
In a report by KXAN, Corey Shaughnessy recounted the harrowing night, describing how it started as any normal evening, "You know, you eat dinner, you watch a little TV, you go to bed. Just, you’re gonna wake up and go to work the next day." Her life with her husband was shattered when she awoke to gunfire. After Ted Shaughnessy went to investigate a noise, having armed himself, shots promptly rang out. Later investigation by police found no signs of forced entry, intensifying the mystery.
While initially seeming like a victim alongside his mother, Nicolas Shaughnessy's stint aiding his mother in running the family's jewelry business came to an abrupt end when he and Edison were taken into custody. A Facebook post from the store announced Nicolas's involvement in continuing his father's legacy, but after the arrest on May 29, the store saw closure. Details on the case continue to unravel.
