Segura, an AISD graduate whose mother taught in the district, initially took on the interim superintendent role in December 2022, aiming to bring stability to the 73,000-student body after a tumultuous period exacerbated by the pandemic and frequent leadership turnovers. On that chilly Saturday at Marshall Middle School, Segura expressed a heartfelt dedication to his new position, “I never thought that I would be in this position, to be honest,” he confided to the community, as reported by Austin American Statesman.
Having navigated the waters of interim leadership, Segura is poised to confront significant challenges that include a state mandate to address a backlog of special education evaluations and the management of a $2.4 billion bond package. His key to tackling such issues, he believes, is cultivating a culture of trust within the district. “You can have all these plans, but if you don’t have the right culture, you’re going to fail,” Segura said.
Nonetheless, the board's confidence in Segura's capabilities to steer the district forward shines through, with school board President Arati Singh applauding his demonstrated ability to lead and manage complex organizations. Promising results have been shown in efforts to tackle the special education backlog, reducing overdue evaluations by 83%, according to Austin American Statesman. “Matias has shown us and demonstrated to us his ability to think five steps ahead and really put things into the place that we're going to be needing,” said Singh.
