A bloody New Year's murder has rocked an Austin community after a woman was fatally shot by her boyfriend, who then turned the gun on himself – but survived. The Austin Police responded to a distress call on January 1, at a residence on the 4900 block of E Oltorf St where they encountered a gruesome scene, as per Austin Police Department.

Arriving officers discovered Naomi Davis, unresponsive and critically wounded from a gunshot. Before succumbing to her injuries, Davis' attacker, identified as Martin Rodriguez, inflicted more violence upon her – this while struggling against police. Despite a self-inflicted gunshot wound, Rodriguez wrestled with officers until they finally subdued and arrested him. Rodriguez, who has a history of unlawful weapon possession, was sent to a local hospital in stable condition and has been charged with First-Degree Murder, according to the Austin Police Department.

Details revealed by APD's Homicide unit confirmed Rodriguez's criminal record; he was previously arrested on December 1, 2023, for carrying a weapon unlawfully given his felon status. After posting a personal recognizance bond, he was released just two weeks later, on December 15, as stated in the Austin Police Department.
