Boston's Brighton neighborhood is gearing up for a grand celebration as their treasured Faneuil Branch of the Boston Public Library prepares to swing open its doors on January 25th after a vigorous $14 million renovation. Mayor Michelle Wu, alongside BPL, has announced the completion of this extensive makeover that has expanded and modernized the historic 1931 Art Deco building. The mayor invites locals to join in a ribbon-cutting event marking the rejuvenation of a beloved community beacon, as reported by the Boston Public Library.

In her statement, Mayor Wu emphasized the side that libraries play as symbols of knowledge, inclusivity, and progress in the city. "The reopening of the Faneuil Branch means a revitalized hub for the Brighton community. Our libraries throughout our city are symbols of our dedication to knowledge, inclusivity, and progress," she told the Boston Public Library. The overhaul added nearly 5,000 square feet of usable space and integrated a blend of the community's desires with the necessary enhancements for today's digital world.

Boston Public Library President David Leonard expressed his excitement about the project, highlighting the blend of historical respect with modern advancement. "The reimagined Faneuil Branch in Oak Square not only breathes new life into this historic building but also adds new services to better respond to the ever-evolving needs of our patrons,"  Leonard said

Among the notable upgrades is a new Children's Room, fondly named JaiJai's Room after a late young community member and volunteer, that features a custom mural incorporating artwork from local children. Kerrie Griffin, Director of the City of Boston's Public Facilities Department, shared her eagerness for residents to discover the new features and improved accessibility. "We're thrilled for residents to experience the new and improved Faneuil Branch in Oak Square! We hope you enjoy the combination of new and old, with its restored historic features and universal access features, especially the improved access around the entire library," she told Boston Public Library. The city also has plans for further enhancement across other library branches.

The Faneuil Branch will reinstate its tradition of service to the community with hours that extend into evenings and weekends. Patrons can visit Monday through Thursday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Tuesday hours extend from 12 p.m. to 8 p.m., and also on Friday and Saturday when doors will open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. These updated hours, including expanded Saturday service, are a welcome change.
