A Bronx man has been slapped with a two-year prison sentence for his role in a massive fentanyl trafficking operation. Chanty Reynoso Vasquez, 28, was handed down his sentence on January 5 by U.S. District Judge Mark G. Mastroianni after pleading guilty in July 2023 to possession with intent to distribute a hefty 400 grams or more of fentanyl.

Documents filed in court detail that Reynoso Vasquez was caught transporting over 30,000 bags of fentanyl-laced heroin from the Bronx to Springfield on March 30, 2022. The Drug Enforcement Administration spearheaded the investigation that ultimately pinned down Vasquez, who now faces a solid two years behind bars to reckon with his crimes.

This bust highlights the ongoing war against the opioid epidemic that has been plaguing streets across the nation. Acting U.S. Attorney Joshua S. Levy, together with DEA Special Agent in Charge Brian D. Boyle and Springfield Police Commissioner Cheryl Clapprood, announced the sentencing in a push to showcase federal efforts to crack down on illegal narcotics distribution.

"Our office is committed to doing everything within our power to combat the opioid epidemic that has claimed too many lives in Massachusetts," Levy stated in the announcement obtained by the Justice Department's official release. The case, which was prosecuted by Assistant U.S. Attorney Todd E. Newhouse of the Springfield Branch Office, is part of a broader initiative to aggressively pursue those involved in the trafficking of deadly drugs like fentanyl.
