Chaos broke out in southeast Atlanta yesterday afternoon as police say a burglary turned deadly, leaving one man shot in an apartment complex near Interstate 20. The shooting occurred at the Capitol Gateway apartments, at 172 Logan Street SE. According to a statement obtained by FOX 5 Atlanta, police responded to reports of shots fired and a burglary in progress just before 4 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the man deceased with gunshot wounds.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a woman, suspected to be the shooter, was also found at the location. The circumstances of the shooting, including the residence targeted in the burglary, were not immediately clear. Investigators later revealed that the man and woman were acquainted with each other.
"It appears that it's going to be an escalating dispute between the male and female," Lt. Germain Dearlove said in a statement. Per FOX 5 Atlanta, "It seems like [the male] was trying to appear to enforce entry into the [woman’s] apartment and that led to an altercation that led to a shooting incident." Police believe the woman fired the deadly shots as the man tried to gain entry into her apartment.
The names of the involved parties have not been disclosed, and it remains unknown if the woman will face charges or if detectives consider the shooting act might have been in self-defense. The man was only identified as being in his 30s at the time of his death. Authorities continue to investigate the incident, and more information is expected to emerge as the case unfolds.
