A Florida man was handed a hefty prison sentence yesterday for his participation in the Capitol riot on January 6, 2021. According to Local 10 News, Gilbert Fonticoba, the 49-year-old Hialeah resident and member of the Proud Boys, will face 48 months behind bars followed by 36 months of supervised release, as ruled by U.S. District Judge Timothy J. Kelly.
In the courtroom, Fonticoba showed emotional distress as he lamented the repercussions of his actions, saying, “I have brought shame upon my family through my actions on Jan. 6,” a statement that came during a moment of reflection on his part in the turmoil that had unfolded, the event was also described by Bloomberg Law as part of the fallout from the riot. He was convicted on counts of obstruction of an official proceeding and civil disorder.
Fonticoba's actions included helping dismantle a fence and impeding law enforcement tasked with the Capitol's protection during the infamous siege, details emerging in the aftermath painted a picture of a man who was unrepentant in the immediate hours that followed; he was heard celebrating the breach in a phone conversation declaring, “We breached the f**in’ Capitol hill, brah. We breached the f**in’ Capitol building, brah”, his joy over the events he now laments was made apparent by federal prosecutors.
Authorities cuffed Fonticoba in October 2021, and the Department of Justice has identified him as a participant of the “Vice City” chapter of the Miami Proud Boys since 2019, an affiliation that brought him into the national spotlight for all the wrong reasons and now, this infamous attention now culminates in a prison sentence that punctuates his descent from patriotic fervor to the ignominy of being a central figure in one of the most contentious moments in recent American history.
