In a move to bolster public transportation options, Capital Metro (CapMetro) has revealed plans to extend its Pickup service to the Dove Springs area of southeast Austin, beginning Jan. 14. KVUE reports that this service, which mirrors the convenience of popular rideshare companies, allows passengers to spontaneously to request rides within a specified zone for a flat fee.

The initiative promises to connect commuters to other CapMetro routes and essential destinations, some of which include local schools, healthcare facilities, and recreational centers as highlighted by KXAN. The Dove Springs Pickup Zone is especially designed to facilitate ease and accessibility, providing a crucial bridge to communities within the southeast Austin corridor. The service can be requested via an app or, for those without access to mobile technology, a phone call.

Pricing for the service is set at $1.25, and children have the liberty to ride at no cost. People interested can get a glimpse at the new Dove Springs service zone map, ensuring they are within reach of this latest transit offering. Pickup services, which CapMetro has successfully established in other Austin localities and neighboring cities, continue to strive toward closing the gaps that residents face in accessing transportation.

Additionally, as CapMetro further streamlines its operations, adjustments to various routes will take effect this January. They plan to remove suspended Express Routes and restructure existing services to better meet ridership patterns that have evolved since 2020. KXAN states that these changes come alongside short-term suspensions of the Red Line CapMetro Rail service, starting Friday, for essential improvements, resuming on Jan. 16.

To accommodate the suspended rail service, CapMetro has announced temporary shuttle services on Friday and Saturday for commuters traveling from Leander, Lakeline, and Howard rail stations to the downtown station. Additional bus services, while not running directly to the downtown station, will operate from other stations to ensure continued access to the heart of Austin.
