Carlsbad residents can expect to see some changes in their local infrastructure starting next week. Caltrans and SANDAG Build NCC are set to kick off construction on Chestnut Avenue and Pio Pico Drive, aiming to enhance the area with new bike lanes, sidewalks, a widened underpass, and room for what will eventually be community art. According to an announcement on Caltrans District 11's Facebook page, this hefty project will commence on Monday, February 5.
The details outlined in the same Facebook post highlight the intentional planning to minimize disruptions from the get-go, albeit parking and bus stops along the affected routes are set to move. Commuters who normally park under the I-5/Chestnut Avenue underpass will need to find alternative spots, as parking is suspended within a 300-foot radius of the construction zone. North County Transit District's Route 325 bus stops will also scoot south by a breezy 200 feet to accommodate the work.
Build NCC is more than just a roadwork initiative, it's a significant leap toward improving transportation and protecting the environment, providing better coastal access across several cities. The Build NCC web page informs us that this is merely the first phase in the larger 40-year North Coast Corridor Program. It's a pivotal piece in an elaborate puzzle, promising to pay dividends in both aesthetic and functional urban planning.
The outlined construction work is expected to roll until Summer 2025. Crews have been instructed to specifically work to lessen noise, and restrictive access to properties should not be an issue. Furthermore, to ensure everyone's safety, Caltrans has arranged majority of the construction activity to occur during daylight from 7 a.m. until 3 p.m., with only the less intrusive operations scheduled to happen at night from 9 p.m. to 5 a.m.
