A tragic sacrifice shook the small town of Carmel, Maine, as a town manager died after heroically saving his son from the chilling grasp of a frozen pond. Kevin Howell, aged 51, was walking with his 4-year-old son near Etna Pond on Friday morning, when the ice beneath them tragically gave way, dragging both father and son into the frigid waters.

According to reports by NECN, Howell managed, despite the perilous conditions, to quickly hoist his young son out of the water. He instructed the boy to run home and get his mother. The brave child, doing just as his father said, raced back to their house to alert his mother who then made an urgent 911 call for help.

The Penobscot County Sheriff’s Office disclosed, in a Facebook post, that Howell's wife, armed with an anchor and a rope, endeavored to rescue her husband. She tethered the rope to the shore but as she attempted to help her husband, she fell through the ice as well. "She tied the rope on the shore but also fell through the ice," NBC News reported.

It was then Detective Jordan Norton of the Penobscot Sheriff's Office, who first responded to the emergency call, that managed to reach Howell's wife. Norton crawled across the "treacherous" ice, steadfastly holding onto the rope, and was able to pull her to safety. Unfortunately, her husband was nowhere to be found at that moment.

An intense search ensued, with members from the Maine Warden Service and Carmel Fire Department converging on the site, scouring the icy expanse for Howell. After hours of tense searching, the somber discovery was made by two Maine Warden Service divers. Howell's body was located and recovered from the pond, marking a heartbreaking end to the day's events. The divers found Howell at about 2 p.m., "a little before 2 p.m.," the Sheriff's Office indicated, per NBC News.

Kevin Howell left behind a legacy defined by his final act of unwavering love and sacrifice. He was a mainstay in the Carmel community, contributing as the town manager. As the small town grapples with the magnitude of this loss, the courage shown by Howell in his last moments casts a long shadow, reflecting the length to which a father would go to ensure the safety of his child.
