Liquor stores across multiple Chicago districts are on high alert after a spate of armed robberies, with the Chicago Police Department circulating a business alert to warn and advise local establishments. According to the Chicago Police Department's statement, the robberies occurred in the 14th, 16th, 17th, 18th, 19th, and 25th Districts, targeting liquor stores. The perpetrators, armed with handguns have compelled employees to hand over U.S. currency, cigarettes, and liquor, and in some instances, demanded access to the store safes before fleeing the scene.
The string of incidents, all carried out with chilling precision, began on January 7 and spanned several locations including the 2400 block of N. Ashland Ave., the 3400 block of N. Sheffield Ave., and the 2100 block of N. Halsted St. Subsequent robberies unfolded up until January 11, hitting the 6700 block of W. Belmont Ave. at 10:20 p.m. The offenders, described as African American males in their mid-20s to early 30s, ranged in height from 5'7" to 6'0", and weighed between 145 and 165 lbs, according to descriptions released by the authorities.
Business owners are being urged to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to law enforcement. They are advised not to engage with the perpetrators if confronted, and to prioritize their safety and that of their customers. Further recommendations include the maintenance of functional surveillance equipment to capture potential evidence for police investigations.
In response to the crimes, the police have emphasized the importance of community alertness. "Be aware of this crime and alert nearby businesses," the statement advised. "Call 911 immediately and provide a detailed description of the offender(s), including any vehicle description and license plate information." Merchants in these areas are grappling not just with the threat to their livelihoods, but also the palpable sense of unease that has settled over their community as they brace for the possibility of being the next target.
