The Chicago Police Department is cautioning the Deering community after a string of motor vehicle thefts struck the 9th District over the recent months, according to a community alert released on January 3rd. Thefts have been reported on various blocks including South Francisco Avenue, South Sacramento Avenue, and South Richmond Street, with vehicles reported missing either the same day or the very next day after being parked by their owners.
Details provided by CPD indicate incidents occurred at varying times, such as the early morning theft at 5:00 AM on the 5200 Block of South Francisco Avenue and another mid-evening incident between 4:00 PM and 7:30 AM on the 5200 Block of South Sacramento Avenue, the inconsistency of timing demonstrates a brazen disregard for the time of day and the vigilant eyes of the neighborhood watch. Residents of the affected areas are struck by a string of losses, where one's conveyance, their means of navigating this sprawling cityscape, is vanished into the night, leaving not but the chill of absence and the whisper of lost mobility.
Authorities describe the offenders as unknown and encourage residents to take preventative measures, such as not leaving keys in the vehicle, reporting suspicious activities immediately, and securing vehicle doors and windows. Given the spate of thefts, community members are advised to be extra vigilant and to report any suspicious individuals loitering in the area to Chicago police without delay. The police department also suggests that owners of particular makes like Kia and Hyundai obtain anti-theft steering wheel locks from their local CAPS office to deter such incidents.
Additional measures promoted by CPD include etching a special traceable marking into vehicles' catalytic converters available at all 22 police districts, and the offer of reimbursement for the cost of GPS tracking devices for residents who register with the City, steps are put in place to not only discourage theft but also aid in the swift recovery of stolen vehicles.
