The Chicago Police Department has sounded the alarm on a series of brazen snatch-and-grab robberies terrorizing the 2nd District. According to a community alert, the perpetrator, described only as an African-American male teenager in dark clothing, has been targeting individuals glued to their cell phones.
These incidents, which began on December 10, have seen the thief strike repeatedly with the same modus of approaching victims before abruptly commandeering their phones and making a quick getaway, either on foot or with an accomplice vehicle. The most recent thefts occurred on January 11, 2024, within just 20 minutes and a block apart. First on the 1600 block of East 55th St. at 3:40 P.M., then moving to the 5000 block of South East End Ave. at 4:00 p.m.
The pattern of robberies, amounting to at least five in a month, has left the Hyde Park neighborhood on edge. The Chicago Police Department urges residents to maintain vigilance and report any suspicious behavior immediately. "Always be aware of your surroundings" and "If you are confronted by an assailant remain calm," the advisory warns.
Authorities are imploring anyone with information to step forward and have placed emphasis on the safety of the community over heroics. Victims and witnesses should dial 9-1-1 as soon as it is safe to do so and are encouraged to remain on the scene when possible to assist officers upon their arrival.
