Chicago is ramping up its DUI crackdown as police in the 5th (Calumet) and 19th (Town Hall) Districts prepare for Saturation Patrols targeting impaired drivers this coming weekend. According to the Chicago Police Department, the 5th District will see increased surveillance from 6 p.m. Friday, January 19, 2024, to 2 a.m. Saturday, January 20, with officers on the lookout for signs of driving under the influence, speeding, and other violations such as disregarding seat belt laws.

In a similar initiative previously conducted in the 9th (Deering) District, the outcome yielded no DUI arrests but documented a list of other offenses, including five unsafe vehicle violations, four insurance violations, and three speed violations, totaling up to 20 citations, as reported by the Chicago Police Department. Meanwhile, the 19th District's patrol is scheduled for 6 p.m. Saturday, January 20 to the early hours of Sunday, rounding out a weekend of stringent traffic enforcement, this latest phase highlights a continual effort to ensure road safety.

Deploying the Breath Alcohol Testing (BAT) Mobile Unit is one tactic used by the department to streamline the DUI charge process, potentially issuing Individual Recognizance Bonds at the site. Drivers found in violation may face immediate consequences, with the intent of this high-visibility law enforcement being to deter traffic violations and reduce roadway accidents related to impaired driving.

Reflecting on similar operations, the 2nd (Wentworth) District reported no DUI arrests but handed out a notable 39 citations for a variety of infractions last January, marking a concerning number of unsafe vehicle violations (16 in total) and 11 instances of speeding. Such statistics, as presented by the Chicago Police Department, underline the underlying issues that such patrols aim to combat as the city moves forward with its zero-tolerance stance on reckless driving.
