Chicago's 2nd District is on alert after a string of vehicle break-ins has residents questioning the safety of their property in what's perceived as a normally tranquil area. According to the Chicago Police Department's community alert, multiple incidents of criminal damage to vehicles have been reported between January 2, 2024, and January 7, 2024. The offenders have not shown restraint in their methods, opting to brazenly break vehicle windows, rummage through personal belongings, and, in some cases, outright steal from the cars they've vandalized.
Residents within the 3100-3400 block of S. Giles Ave. and the 0-400 block of E. 32nd St. are especially encouraged to remain vigilant. The police remind those living in the affected areas to always be aware of their surroundings. The CPD urges individuals to report any suspicious activity swiftly and to quickly apprehend those responsible for this spat of criminal acts.
The CPD recommends keeping valuables out of sight and requests that if anyone has video surveillance capturing the incidents, save and provide a copy to the investigating detectives. This evidence could prove critical in piecing together the timeline and pattern of these crimes, potentially leading to a break in the case.
