A shocking shootout erupted in Chicago's Gold Coast neighborhood early Monday, where a police officer and a suspect were shot following a brazen crash-and-grab burglary at a Prada store. The Chicago Police responded to the upscale shopping area around 4:15 a.m. after suspects rammed a Dodge Durango into the boutique at 30 E. Oak St. and looted it, according to a report from the Chicago Sun-Times.
The ensuing violence left an officer wounded in the leg and the 33-year-old male suspect in serious to critical condition. The offender, who has a long rap sheet dating back to 2007 including a 2008 felony conviction for burglary, was wanted by federal authorities on a warrant in a gun case, the Sun-Times has learned. The officer, a veteran of the force since 2006, was released from the hospital later that day, as confirmed by Ald. Brian Hopkins.
The suspect, found with two handguns equipped with extended magazines – one modified into an illegal machine gun – was an "active participant" in the burglary, surveillance footage showed. The perpetrator attempted to flee the scene and fired at the officers when instructed to relinquish his weapon. This escalation in the level of violence during what started as a property crime has raised concerns among experts and the community alike. Arthur Lurigio, a criminologist and professor at Loyola University Chicago, stated that such a violent encounter was unexpected and emphasized that retail stores might need to reassess their security measures, CBS Chicago reported.
